The buses in Mali, often European castoffs with sealed windows and long-dead air
conditioning, are always packed to bursting. By contrast, the top of a cargo
truck makes for a spacious ride with plenty of fresh air. Only a handful of
vehicles pass through town each day, so there's a lot of hanging around
waiting for the next one, and when it comes, a lot of pushing and shoving
and screaming and yelling to get to be on it.
