Typical lunch stand
(Morocco: Fes)

January 2002
Morocco: Fes: Typical lunch stand

This place is typical of the hundreds of informal restaurants scattered throughout the medina (old city). You can mix and match any of the items on display, usually coming out to 10 or 15 dirhams (about US$1.50) for a plate. All the Moroccan-style bread (see the half loaf on the counter in front of the proprietor) you can eat is free. If you ask me, the beans - in a tomato sauce unlike anything I've ever had outside of Morocco, and perfectly suited for sopping up with a quarter loaf of fresh-baked bread - are the best part.
