Around the time that several American civilian aid workers were ambushed in a drive-by shooting, we saw a number of US Army armored vehicles heading down the road at a fair clip, and intersections filled with heavily armed Iraqi police. This cloud of black smoke erupted a mile or so away. We didn't figure out what it was or whether it was related. This was as close as I came to the unpredictable violence that still plagues the country.
